General information. It is not tax, legal or financial advice for a specific situation.

Tax Preparation Checklist

Start with income documents, your prior return and a list of personal or business changes. Keep corrected statements with the originals and identify anything still missing. Your final document list depends on your filing situation; a checklist is a starting point for that discussion.

  • Income documents
  • Applicable expense records
  • Information about personal or business changes
  • A prior return when available

Small Business Recordkeeping

Records should explain the purpose of a transaction as well as the amount paid. Keep source documents where you can retrieve them and note unusual activity while the details are fresh. Separating personal and business activity makes later review easier to follow.

  • Separate personal and business activity
  • Keep source documents
  • Review transactions regularly
  • Note questions while they are current

Estimated Tax Basics

A useful estimated-payment discussion starts with current income and payments already made. Last year’s return provides context, but changes in work or business activity may require updated assumptions. Bring federal and California payment records so the conversation can consider both separately.

  • What income has changed
  • Which payments have been made
  • What decisions are approaching
  • When to review again

Bookkeeping Checklist

A monthly close connects statements and source documents with the transactions in your books. Missing receipts, loan activity and unexplained transfers can delay that review. Keep a short list of questions for your bookkeeper and identify the period each document belongs to.

  • Account statements
  • Receipts and invoices
  • Payroll activity
  • Transactions that need context

Preparing for Your Consultation

Explain the outcome you need, the years or periods involved and any deadline shown on a notice. You do not need to diagnose the issue before contacting ASB. Ask the office how to share confidential records; an ordinary email inquiry should describe the situation without including sensitive documents.

  • Describe what you need
  • Gather relevant notices or documents
  • Note important dates
  • Prepare your main questions
